Melting Fear.

When I was in my last semester of college I answered most questions with, “I don’t know.” People would ask, “Yo, what are you up to this weekend?” I would follow it pleasantly with, “I don’t know.” Or the intriguing question my roommate would pose as she held up a mysterious bowl of food from the refrigerator, “What do you think this is?” I would answer, “I don’t know.” I never wanted to give a definite answer.

Ever.

When the harder questions came about, “What are you going to do after to graduate?” the same pattern arose. I would say the same thing, but in a slightly more polite manor—“You know, I’m not quite sure yet.” An uncommitted demeanor made the stress melt away. Or so I thought.

The more I didn’t give a definite answer the more people would reply with a tilted head, followed by rolling their eyes to the ground, “Good for you. It’s so hard to find a job in this market anyway.” Their forced smiles made me feel more and more uneasy. So I took the quickest job I could think of. The job that makes the least amount of money and worst for an introverted individual: Starbucks.

I wanted to get out of academia. I wanted to live with a little less stress and a little more time. It didn’t work out that way. Instead my mornings start at 7am and days end around 5pm. I fervently scurry about the drink bar stirring, shaking, pouring, washing, and standing. For hours on end. Some customers are pleased and receive their drinks with smiles but many do not. Many don’t say a word.

I was given to gift of an education. Now—finally—I have decided not to waste it. I have decided to pursue use for it in the best way possible. Prayer will lead me and I will follow. I have chosen to follow God. His plan will lead me to where I need to go; Starbucks it’s it.

Fear does not push you backward, nor does fear take you forward; rather, fear is the catatonic state that melts you in a single spot unable to reach the stars.
